There’s no questioning that I am no pro when it comes to flying quadcopters, but I always wanted to own one. So I started looking out for a quadcopter that is robust, has photo or video capturing ability and doesn’t burn a hole in my pocket. And that’s why I chose the Syma X5C Explorers Quadcopter.

Top Features

It costs merely $50 and has a host of amazing capabilities. Some of the specifications of the Syma X5C worth mentioning are:

  • 6-axis gyroscope for maximum flight stability
  • HD camera included: specs 2MP with 720p video recording
  • Easy to Fly (indoor & outdoor)
  • Remote control included with max distance of 50 meters
  • Hover capability
  • Blade protectors: plastic protective parts to avoid damages to things and persons

These specifications clearly indicate that it is a all-round economic quad especially meant for beginners. Not for nothing the Syma X5C is the #1 Best Seller in Hobby RC Helicopters category on Amazon with over 1700 customer reviews right now.

What’s in the Box

The quadcopter package consist of:

  • The Syma X5C drone RTF
  • Two spare propellers
  • Four propeller guards
  • The drone’s battery (remote controller battery not included)
  • One Charger
  • One Screwdriver
  • One 2 GB microSD card
  • One USB connector for the computer (also providing charging)

After putting in 4 AA batteries in the remote controller, I could start flying the drone.

Total time from opening the box to get ready to fly: 5 minutes.

How’s Built

The done was light, well built and the propellers were well balanced. But the remote controller on the other hand was mediocre. Even though the remote control was light and built well, it had a number of fake buttons & switches which puzzled me. I hope these buttons will enable more features in future firmware releases!

The Syma X5C Explorers is built with a modular design. This means that you can easily replace and swap out parts. Again, this makes it perfect for beginners as crashes are part of the learning curve for any quadcopter pilot.

Excellent Flyer

The X5C is small (wingspan of 31cm), stable (thanks to the 6-axis gyroscope) and can be flown indoors, but if you were to take advice from my past experiences, I prefer much more using it outdoors.

When flown outside, the experience of the Syma X5C Explorers Quadcopter was astonishing. It was easy to fly and hover the drone around. The control stick has the right amount of resistance hence preventing any jerky or unintended manoeuvres.

The camera too worked well and the image/ video quality is decent for a drone in this price range. Of course would not make sense to compare the resulting videos with the Full-HD camera of the Parrot Bebop or the 4K camera of the DJI Phantom 3 Pro. I was able to fly the quadcopter around, shoot some images and videos, all within a window of 7 minutes. After that the drone started losing altitude, indicating that it was nearly out of power.

So after thoroughly testing it firsthand, I would like to mention some of the pros and cons of this copter.

Pros

  • Ease of use – The Syma X5C Explorers Quadcopter is really easy to use and fly. The propellers can be easily attached to the drone, and after putting the batteries in the RC, you are good to go. The 2.4G remote control fits perfectly in the hand and has an impressive fling range of over 60 metres, even if official specs mention 50 meters as maximum distance.
  • Price – Yes, it doesn’t have a high quality camera, but it is worth every penny. Considering its cost and product quality, it is way better than any other entry level quadcopter.
  • Great for beginners – The quadcopter can be assembled and used in no time and can be easily flown outdoors. It’s controller sticks are user-friendly, thus making it the perfect quadcopter for beginners.

Cons

  • Cheap USB charging cable – Even though the drone is robust, the USB cable that comes with it for charging the batteries of the drone is of relatively low quality. While charging, it gets hot really fast, and if kept on charging for long duration, you can smell burnt plastic. Nothing that can’t be fixed with a better cable and few bucks.
  • Spare part issues – The seller only provides a warranty for 7 days and doesn’t cover replacement parts. Even if you try to buy the parts yourself, customers complain about the limited technical support from the company.

Top Accessories for X5C

If you like accessories as I do, the Syma X5C is a good option for you. Below my favorite ones.

Extra Batteries

With 7 minutes flying time, you can imagine that extra batteries is the number 1 accessory you’ll want to have.

Extra Propellers

If you’re learning how to fly a quadcopter, there will be crashed. And with crashes the most likely damage is bending (or breaking) a prop.

Why buy the Syma X5C

Every coin has two faces, and for Syma X5C Explorers Quadcopter, it is definitely worth of all the praises. Not only is it the #1 hobby RC helicopter in Amazon stores, but also is priced way lower than other drones that have similar specifications.

The shipped product is easy to assemble and use (in 5 minutes!). It is a great drone for beginners who want to start basic aerial photography or experiment before moving to other advanced quadcopters. The 6-axis gyroscope makes maneuvering and hovering easy while the camera can be used to capture pictures.

All in all, the Syma X5C Explorers Quadcopter is worth every accolade.
