What exactly are FPV Racing Drones?

Many hobbyists who have enjoyed remote control flying for years are discovering the exciting new hobby of FPV (first person point of view) flying, and particularly FPV Racing Drones. FPV Racing takes RC one step further. If you’ve ever enjoyed driving or flying remote control devices, you’ll want to check out FPV.

Instead of flying from line-of-sight, with FPV, you can fly a device much further, far out of your line of sight. With the control of four props (thus the name “quadcopter”) and using FPV goggles or video glasses and a camera to view the drone’s location, you can see as if you were on board the quad, and you can fly much faster than a typical RC device.

Often compared to the podracers in Star Wars’ The Phantom Menace, FPV racing drones can be flown far out of visual range at high speeds of over fifty miles an hour. The FPV goggles and the camera mounted on the quadcopter with a radio transmitter allow the operator can see every dip and turn as if riding in the quadcopter. This gives an astonishingly real visual experience of zipping along at heart-racing speeds, dodging obstacles and trying to outpace other quads.

Getting started with FPV Racing Drones

How can you get started with racing quads? Your best bet is to start with a cheap mini-quadcopter when you’re first learning to fly.

That way, you spend less while you’re finding out if this is for you. The other reason is that it’s a little harder than it looks and you will crash a lot while you are learning. If you crash a mini-quadcopter, it’s a lot less expensive and dangerous than crashing a full-size quadcopter.

Trust me, the quadcopter community does not want injuries to result from this sport! So it’s not only about keeping people and property safe, it’s about respecting the community of fellow hobbyists and making sure FPV racing drones keeps their reputation for safety and responsibility. All these are excellent reasons you should start with a mini-quad.

After you’ve been flying for awhile and are ready to move up, you’ve got two options.

  • Buy an RTF or ARF (Ready-to-Fly or Almost-Ready-to-Fly)
  • Build your own quadcopter out of assembled parts or a kit

The advantages of the assembled RTF or ARF–this option gets you in the air right away. There’s no waiting to assemble the quad, and you know for sure your racing drone is going to fly.

The advantages of building it yourself–it may cost a little less, and some people love building almost as much as they love flying. You’ll also have the knowledge to fix the racing drone when it crashes (and it will crash–that’s just part of quadcopter racing).

A good solution if you really want to build your drone, but aren’t that familiar with the components, is to use a kit to assemble a quadcopter. This way, you get the experience that comes with building your own quad, but won’t go wrong and end up with a bunch of parts that doesn’t fly.
