DJI Phantom 4, 4K camera, original DJI.

Camera, Photo and Video

Does DJI have filters for the DJI Phantom 4 camera?

Yes. DJI’s OEM filters are available. They have the stock UV, ND4, ND8, and ND16. These filters have the same matte gray appearance as the DJI Phantom 4’s new composite gimbal and camera, for those wanting a more streamlined look than the PolarPro P3 filters.

Do the PolarPro P3 filters fit the DJI Phantom 4?

Yes. However, you’ll have to remove them before you put on the gimbal guard as they are too wide to stay on and attach the guard. PolarPro has also released ND filters for the Phantom 4. However, these have the same problem. You will need to remove them before putting on the gimbal guard or you can get PolarPro’s lenscap with gimbal lock.

Are there other manufacturers that produce suitable ND filters?

Yes, there are.

Are there polarizing filters for the DJI Phantom 4?

Yes. Just follow this link.

How can I reduce glare in my images?

Fit a lens hood to the camera.

Is it better to take one continues shot or several shorter clips while filming with the DJI Phantom 4?

If you make one continuous shot then the Phantom 4 will break it up into shorter clips for storage. Unfortunately, it does drop frames when it does that. So to keep control over your footage we recommend shooting shorter clips. That way you won’t be unpleasantly surprised by dropped frames.

Can the DJI Phantom 4 lens barrel be removed?

Yes, it can. So, any insertable filters for the DJI Phantom 3 can also be used for the DJI Phantom 4. We recommend using external filters though to minimize the risk of dust gathering in the lens.

Can I attach another camera to the DJI Phantom 4?

No, that’s not possible. That said, the Phantom 4 camera should be well suited to meet your needs.

Can the DJI Phantom 4 camera turn 360 degrees?

No. It only moves up and down. Everything else is controlled by turning the Phantom 4.

Will the propellers stay out of the camera view?

Because of the taller motors the propellers will generally not be seen in video footage. In sports mode, however, they will show in the video because of how much the Phantom 4 has to tilt to achieve its top speed.

Can I take a single still image out of 4k footage?

Yes, most video editing programs allow you to print (render) a single frame.

Does the landing gear show up in videos?

It can. Even though the Phantom 4 has wider landing gear than the DJI Phantom 3 had the landing gear may still show from time to time during yaw.

Does the DJI Phantom 4 camera have a Fish-Eye effect?

No. Some people have reported a little bit of distortion in the corners of the footage but that’s all.

Does the DJI Phantom 4 come with a lens cap?

Yes, it does although it’s integrated in the gimbal guard. If you accidentally lose it you can get a replacement lens cap from Amazon that doesn’t have the gimbal guard or you can get the PolarPro lens cap that replaces the gimbal guard as well. .

Are DJI Phantom 4 images geotagged?

Yes, the photos are tagged with location and altitude.

How do I take a picture / still image while I’m making a video?

Unfortunately, this is not possible.

Can I change the shutter speed the DJI Phantom 4?

Yes. You have some control over this through the DJI Go App. You can further control it by using ND filters.

Does the DJI Phantom 4 only record video in 4k?

No, it also supports underlying video modes like 2.7k and HD.

Is DJI Phantom 4 camera the same as the DJI Phantom 3’s camera?

No. Although they are similar improvements have been made to the Phantom 4 camera. Chromatic aberration has been significantly been reduced as has lens distortion. Aside from that the DJI Phantom 4 can capture 120fps in 1080p (FHD). Although we have to mention that to do this the camera’s field of view will be reduced to 47°.

Why is the field of view smaller when filming at 120 fps?

At 120 fps an incredible amount of data is captured and needs to be written to the disk. To be able to do this the size of the captured footage is reduced.

Can the DJI Phantom 4 camera be removed?

No. If it gets damaged you will pretty much have to replace the underside of the DJI Phantom 4, including the gimbal.

Can I record RAW video with the DJI Phantom 4?

Sort of. Like the DJI Phantom 3 the Phantom 4 can record in LOG. It’s real LOG (a discussiont too long for here) but close enough for most purposes.

Memory Card

What is the maximum memory card size the DJI Phantom 4 accepts?

64Gb. So if, as is likely, the standard 16Gb card the Phantom 4 comes with is not big enough for you, it is still possible to upgrade. Amazon has a wide selection to choose from. Some people have also succesfully used 128GB cards but as DJI still hasn’t confirmed we can use those, get them at your own risk.

What speed micro SD card should I get?

Higher write speeds are better and we recommend a minimum of 60mbps.

In Flight

Will minimum throttle shut down the motors in flight?

No. Holding the ascend/descend stick down only shuts down the motors when the Phantom 4 has detected it has landed. CSC  as we know it ( will no longer shut down the motors in flight either (as of firmware version 1.0.0288) as it has been replaced by a new combination (see next point).

Can I shut down the motors in flight in case of an emergency?

Yes. You can do that by pressing the Return To Home key and simultaneously moving the left stick down and in (as of firmware version 1.0.0288).

Why my DJI Phantom 4 is not stable while hovering?

Try calibrating the IMU on a level surface. Verify that the surface is indeed level by using a level tool.

Will the motors shut down if the DJI Phantom 4 flies upside down?

We’re not sure but we assume it will be the same as with the DJI Phantom 3. That would mean that the motors will indeed shut off when the sensors detect the Phantom 4 is upside down. It also means that the motors will not stop if you crash and get stuck on something. If that happens it is best to shut the engines down with the new Combination Stick Command (left stick – RTH) to avoid extra damage.

Smart modes/features

In which modes do intelligent flight features work?

In all modes except S.

How can I turn off VPS?

There is no way to turn off VPS. You can fly in A-mode though. If you do that VPS will not be used to help the Phantom 4 hold its position. Also, some people have put sticky tape over the VPS sensors. If you choose to do this remember you’re doing it at your own risk.

Has VPS improved with the DJI Phantom 4?

It has. With twice as many sensors (4) hovering accuracy and reliability have improved, creating a more stable flying experience. The downward facing sonar detection height has been increased to 10 meters off the ground.

When using Active Track the DJI Phantom 4 will stay in the same position and won’t follow the subject that’s moving away. So from the video view, the subject gets smaller and smaller as it moves away from the drone.

You need to click the go button for the Phantom 4 to follow the subject.

How do I to enter ActiveTrack Mode?

There are three icons on the left of the camera interface. Click the remote controller icon and four modes will appear: TapFly, ActiveTrack, Normal and Intelligent IOC (equivalent to F Mode on the Phantom 3).

How do I use ActiveTrack Mode?

To follow a person, tap them on your smart device screen. The aircraft will automatically put a green box around them. You will see a human icon in the top-left corner of the screen and a GO button on the right. Press Go to begin tracking. If the aircraft is unable to identify the subject, drag a box around them.

When I press Return To Home the DJI Phantom 4 just lands at the spot that it is at.

Return To Home only works when the Phantom 4 is more than 20 meters away. If it is less than 20 meters away it will just land.

Will TapFly cause the DJI Phantom 4 to crash if I tap on the ground?

No, you don’t have to worry about that. The Phantom 4 will start hovering 0.8m (a little under 3ft).

How do I use TapFly Mode?

Place the camera at or below a 25-degree angle then select a point in the distance and press GO. The aircraft will turn to the destination and then fly there in a straight line. You can adjust the speed from 2mph (4kph) to 22mph (36kph) on the right side of the app. The maximum speed is 22mph (36kph) as slower speeds are required to navigate around complex obstacles.

What happens when I use TapFly and tap above the horizon?

If you do this the Phantom 4 fly away until it loses contact. It will keep going till it reaches its max programmed height. When it finally loses contact with the controller and RTH is initiated. You could prevent this by setting a max distance in the DJI Go App but this will obviously also affect your range during regular flight.

How do I know if the home point was set and where it was set to?

When the home point has been set you will receive an audible confirmation from the DJI Go app (if your phone/tablet’s sound is not muted). You will also see an “H” on the map which indicates the location of the home point.

Is it possible to retake control of the DJI Phantom 4 when it is in Return To Home mode?

Yes. Just press the Return To Home button on your remote controller. Doing this will give you control of the DJI Phantom 4 again.

Does the DJI Phantom 4 support POI?

Yes, the Phantom 4 supports all the intelligent navigation features that the DJI Phantom 3 has.

Does the DJI Phantom 4 come with a controller?

It does. If you need a replacement you can order one from the DJI Store.

Can the remote controller affect the calibration process of DJI Phantom 4 compass?

Yes, it can interfere with the calibration just like metal objects can affect the process. For that reason, DJI recommendes you keep the controller at least 10ft/3m away from the Phantom 4 while you calibrate the compass.

What is the advantage of Quick Release Propellers?

Quick release propellers are faster to install and should be more secure than the self tightening propellers.

Can I leave the propellers on during transport?

It depends. If you have a case made with cutouts for the propeller, yes. If not you’ll risk damaging the propellers.

  1. Tony Cole says:

How does the sensors look for a properly guard when I rub off the Black lines or put a white paper with tape to make the active sensor working? So, I have the prop guards but also like the avoidance on. But, when I run it, it seems to not work sometimes? Like the avoidance systems when it is 100 meters up in the air. I tried called DJI, but they don’t seem to understand.

    • Duncan says:

I’m not sure we fully understand your question either.

But, Obstacle Avoidance is always disabled when you put on the propeller guards. So there is no way to have OA turned on while the prop guards are attached.

I hope that helps a little bit.

  2. Boone says:

I have a phantom 4 when I use my I pad or my android tablet when Flying the live video stream gets pixelated and choppy. But when I use my I phone 6 it’s smooth as silk . Someone told me that my sd card was too small but I didn’t think that could have anything to do with it . Or is it?

    • QuadHangar says:

It shouldn’t have anything to do with your video card. That’s only used to store the actual video, it’s not used by the livestream.

My guess would be that you’re running out of resources. Try shutting down all unnecessary apps. That might help.

  3. Noel says:

Hey guys I just got a P4 Pro+, and every time I tap on the integrated LCD screen on the RC, it makes a keypress tone. Is there a way to mute the integrated screen?

  4. Rick says:

Did update, now won’t fly higher than 100 ft. Tried to reset height still won’t go any higher.

    • Duncan says:

Hi Rick. After the updates (both controller and Phantom 4) you need to be connected to the internet and log in to the DJI app. This will remove the restrictions.
