As you’re here you’re most likely trying to decide what the best drones for Christmas 2016 are.
And you’ve come to the right place.
But before we get to that, you might be wondering why I publish this now. After all, Christmas isn’t until the end of next month.
While that is true and Christmas is still weeks away, the hottest toys often sell out long before Christmas Eve.
And although a lot of quadcopters have evolved well beyond toy status by now, they follow this same rule. If you want to make sure you get the best multirotor for yourself, your spouse, son, daughter, etc , it’s better to act fast than to wait until the final moment.
And don’t worry, as long as you’re on time there is a quadcopter to fit almost every budget. Whether your loved one likes to race or if (s)he prefers to make photos/ or video, I’ve got you covered.
Please keep in mind, prices are subject to change. This is why I didn’t publish them.
Instead, I’ve provided links so you can check the current price. Also keep in mind that, as Christmas comes closer and demand becomes bigger than supply, prices are likely to go up. So your best bet is to order as soon as possible.
Now, before we begin, a disclaimer. This top 10 only looks at consumer drones. Industrial drones are excluded as they’re generally not seen as Holiday presents.
But enough talking. Here they are, the ten best drones for Christmas 2016:
The AirDog Action Sports Drone is the ultimate quadcopter for the action sports enthusiast.
When it comes to filming action sports there is no better choice than the AirDog.
It’s mostly autonomous and will take great footage of you without you having to worry about the controls. It’s right there, following you all the time. Click here to read our review.
So if it’s such a great drone, why does it come in at #10?
Easy. Although it’s a great quadcopter it is marketed to a limited audience. If you want a drone to shoot you while you’re doing sports, this one wins hands down. But, it’s not as versatile as the other drones in this list.

If you like luxury sports cars then this is the drone for you. It’s fast, easy to fly and easy to control. With a top speed of about 75 mph (120 km/h) the Walkera Furious 320 is fast. Really fast. And because it’s easy to control anybody that has got some experience flying quadcopters will have no problem at all flying the Walkera Furious 320. Click here for our review.

08) Hubsan H107D
The Hubsan H107D, a small and affordable fpv quadcopter.
At #8 you’ll find one of our all-time favorites.
07) Parrot Bebop 2
The Parrot Bebop 2, a fun quadcopter.
I had a lot of fun just flying around with the Parrot Bebop 2. And I’m not the only one. I’ve spoken to several people that feel exactly the same way. The Bebop 2 is fun!
However, I have to add that without the SkyController the Parrot’s range is limited. And personally, probably because I’m used to flying with a controller, and I found it less intuitive to fly the quad from the mobile device.
If you do get the SkyController then it all becomes a lot more expensive and the Parrot Bebop 2 loses its price advantage over some of the other quadcopters. That’s the reason it only made it to the 7th spot on this list
But, if you’re looking for a drone that’s easy to take along, fun to fly and you don’t care much about the range and don’t need 4k video quality then go ahead and get the Parrot Bebop 2. You’ll have endless fun.
06) Syma X5C
The Syma X5C, the most sold quadcopter for beginners.
Almost everybody I know learned to fly with the Syma X5C.
It offers great value for money and it’s surprisingly sturdy for the price. Mine crashed more times than I can remember and it still flies.
Once you learn to properly control the Syma X5C you can easily move on to other drones and feel comfortable about your ability to control them, even if they lose GPS. Click here for our review.
I know some of you are thinking:”Wait, the Syma X5C at #6? How did that happen?”
Well, it’s quite simple really. This is not my top 10 list of the best drones in 2016. This is my Christmas top 10.
And like last year, there will be a huge number of people that are just now getting their first drone. As these people haven’t flown a quadcopter before I think this is the best option for them.
05) Yuneec Breeze
The Yuneec Breeze, selfies and so much more!
Often described as Yuneec’s Selfie drone it’s so much more than that. It’s an easy to control, flying, 4k video camera that has special modes which allow you to do, amongst other things, selfies.
If you’ve never flown a drone before but really want good quality video and photo then you should definitely consider the Yuneec Breeze. A great drone at a decent price.
03) DJI Mavic &
DJI Mavic Pro &
GoPro Karma, 2 great new drones!
As you can see, I skipped 4th place to end up with a tied 3rd place instead.
The GoPro Karma has been recalled! I’m still leaving it in here for now as I’m hoping they will have the problems solved shortly and that it’s available in time for Christmas. That said, I’m not holding my breath and if you want to get a gift for somebody (and get it on time) then you might want to look at one of the other drones instead).
Both the DJI Mavic &
the GoPro Karma are great drones and I would be hard pressed to say which is the best drone for Christmas. Personally, I favor the GoPro Karma as it comes with a handheld gimbal for stabilized handheld video. But the DJI Mavic is a bit more portable which ranks higher for some people. You know the person you’re getting it for best (whether it’s for yourself or for somebody else) so I leave it up to you to decide which is more important, the DJI Mavic’s portability or the GoPro Karma’s ability to create both aerial and handheld stabilized video.
You can read more about the DJI Mavic here or click here to see the current price of the DJI Mavic, just click here.

And now it’s time for my #1 choice, the best out of the best drones for Christmas 2016. I know, I skipped #2. That’s because there is a tie for first place. I know I’m going to get flak for this from both sides. Just like I probably will get for the shared #3 spot. But in my opinion both of these 2 drones deserve to be on the top spot of my Best drones fro Christmas list. So without further ado:
I know, I skipped #2. That’s because there is a tie for first place as well. And I know I’m going to get flak for this from both sides. Just like I probably will get for the shared #3 spot. But in my opinion both of these 2 dronesboth deserve to be on the top spot of my Best drones for Christmas list. So without further ado:
Both theTyphoon H and the Phantom 4 are amazing pieces of engineering, easy to fly and come with a lot of features right out of the box.
The Yuneec Typhoon H is available in 2 versions, the regular Typhoon H, and the Professional. Although both of them are excellent drones I chose the Yuneec Typhoon H Professional as it comes with RealSense. Intel’s obstacle avoidance solution that is far superior to the sonar used on the regular version.
I’m not going to say much about it here but you can click here to read our review if you want to know more.
If you’re on a slightly limited budget, click here to see the price of the Typhoon H with sonar instead of RealSense
The DJI Phantom 4 only comes in one version (unlike the DJI Phantom 3). This removes a big problem buyers had last year (which version is the best for me?). Like the Typhoon H it comes with a long list of features and is just a joy to fly. Even if you have never flown a quadcopter before you’ll be able to handle the Phantom 4 easily (although I recommend starting out with a Syma X5C anyway as it’ll teach you valuable flying skills.
I’m not going to say much about this one either as most of you are already familiar with it. If not, you can read my review here.
Edit: I had to make a last minute addition as DJI decided to launch the DJI Phantom 4 Pro right after I published this list. So here it is; 1# gold star, the DJI Phantom 4 Pro
The DJI Phantom 4 Pro offers everything the DJI Phantom 4 offers, and more!
An improved camera, ultrabright 5.5 inch monitor, new intelligent flight modes, improved obstacle avoidance and more.
There you have it, my quadcopter for Christmas recommendations for 2016.
If you think I forgot one that should be on the list, feel free to let me know in the comments. And if you decided to order one of these for either yourself or a loved one, congratulations! I’m sure it’ll bring countless hours of fun.
